Upholstery Cleaning Brampford Speke and a National Controversy!
Today’s MASTERCLEAN® travels took us to Brampford Speke, near Exeter, where we were carrying out professional upholstery cleaning on a lovely striped fabric suite.
The upholstery was carefully cleaned using professional hot-water extraction, working methodically across the fabric to remove accumulated soil while controlling the amount of moisture being introduced.
The striped design also makes careful, even cleaning particularly important — any inconsistency can be much easier to see on a fabric with such strong, regular lines.

As with all upholstery, the cleaning process starts long before the extraction tool touches the fabric.
The construction and condition of the upholstery are assessed and the fabric checked so that an appropriate cleaning method can be selected. Particular attention is then given to the areas that receive the greatest contact and use, before thorough extraction removes both the cleaning solution and suspended soil.
The result today was a clean, fresh and evenly presented suite ready to return to normal use.
But while Brampford Speke might appear to be a peaceful Devon village, its history contains something rather unexpected.
A Devon Village at the Centre of a National Controversy
In the middle of the 19th century, Brampford Speke became associated with one of Victorian England’s most famous ecclesiastical disputes — the Gorham Case.
The controversy centred on the Reverend George Cornelius Gorham, who had been presented to the living of Brampford Speke, and Henry Phillpotts, Bishop of Exeter.
Their disagreement concerned the doctrine of baptismal regeneration. After examining Gorham's theological views, Phillpotts refused to institute him to the parish.
What might have remained a local disagreement between a clergyman and his bishop became anything but local.
The dispute travelled through the ecclesiastical courts and eventually reached the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, whose decision in 1850 overturned the earlier ruling against Gorham.
The case caused a major national argument about doctrine, authority and the relationship between the Church and the state.
Quite a legacy for a small Devon village!

Thankfully, our visit to Brampford Speke was considerably less controversial. 😂
