Carpet & Faux Suede Upholstery Cleaning Exeter – MASTERCLEAN® Come Up Smelling of Roses!
A recent visit took MASTERCLEAN® to Sweetbrier Lane in Exeter EX1, where our technicians were asked to clean carpets together with a well-used faux suede upholstery suite.
The name Sweetbrier gave us an irresistible title for this particular job. Sweetbrier — Rosa rubiginosa — is a species of wild rose, but there is considerably more to the history of this part of Exeter than its rather pleasant-sounding name suggests.
Before we disappear into old Heavitree, however, there was some cleaning to do — and the faux suede upholstery in particular was about to undergo quite a transformation.
Cleaning Faux Suede Upholstery in Exeter
Faux suede can be extremely comfortable and hard-wearing, but its soft, textured surface can also hold onto body oils and everyday soiling. Over time, this can leave frequently used areas looking noticeably darker and uneven.
That was certainly evident on this suite. Before cleaning, we carefully assessed the upholstery and then worked methodically across each section, paying particular attention to the arms, seating areas and headrests where the heaviest soiling had accumulated.
Cleaning was followed by careful grooming of the faux suede to restore an even appearance to the surface. As the before, during and after photographs show, the improvement was considerable — bringing back a much cleaner, richer and more uniform appearance across the suite.
From Sweetbrier Lane to Old Heavitree
Modern Sweetbrier Lane is surrounded by the busy streets and residential neighbourhoods of Exeter, but its origins reach back much further. The route has been described by the Heavitree Local History Society as an ancient ridgeway, from a time when this part of Exeter would have looked very different from the city we know today.
Memories of the area from the 1950s describe fields, cattle and open countryside close to Sweetbrier Lane. They also recall crossing Heavitree Bridge, where a stream still ran before later development and culverting gradually changed the landscape.
It's one of those fascinating reminders we regularly encounter while working around Devon: beneath streets we now drive along every day are routes and landmarks that have been used by generations before us.
And with sweetbrier itself being the name of a wild rose, we couldn't really resist saying that on this particular Exeter job, MASTERCLEAN® came up smelling of roses! 🌹
Careful Cleaning Makes the Difference
Back inside the property, the faux suede upholstery needed more than simply passing an extraction tool over the surface. Particular attention was given to the more heavily used sections, with the cleaning solution carefully applied and worked through the fabric before extraction.
The photographs show some of that preparation in progress, including treatment of the upholstery and gentle agitation to help loosen accumulated soiling from the textured surface.
It's this preparation that can make such a difference when cleaning upholstery. Different fabrics, levels of soiling and areas of wear need to be assessed individually rather than treating every suite in exactly the same way.
The finished result was a considerable improvement, with the faux suede looking cleaner, more even and refreshed throughout.
