When a carpet looks remarkably like natural sisal, appearance alone isn’t enough. Fibre testing, manufacturer guidance and the right cleaning method came first.
Today’s carpet cleaning job took us back into central Exeter EX1, but this particular carpet had already required a little more investigation than most.
On the original visit, our technicians were presented with an extremely convincing faux-sisal carpet. Although it appeared likely to be man-made, it was such a good reproduction of natural sisal that they weren’t prepared to take an unnecessary risk with the client’s carpet.
Rather than make an assumption and proceed with cleaning, MASTERCLEAN® walked away until a sample could be obtained and the fibre construction properly identified.
Looking Beyond the Face Fibre
Once we had a sample to examine, the construction became particularly interesting.
The face fibres appeared synthetic, but some of the warp and weft/backing fibres looked remarkably like natural material. That mattered. A carpet can contain different fibres within its construction, and identifying only the visible surface doesn't necessarily tell you everything you need to know before introducing moisture or cleaning solutions.
So we tested them.
As part of his ongoing MASTERCLEAN® apprenticeship, Zack carried out the fibre testing himself, putting into practice the identification techniques he has already learned.
During controlled burn testing, both the face and construction fibres shrank away from the flame and melted, producing the characteristic appearance and smell associated with plastic fibres.
Despite appearances, testing confirmed that the carpet was entirely man-made.
Manufacturer Guidance Before Cleaning
Identifying the fibres was only part of the process.
We also contacted the carpet manufacturer for their recommended cleaning procedure. Their advice was specific: the carpet should receive a non-detergent, low-moisture hand clean.
And that's exactly what we delivered.
Rather than choosing a cleaning method simply because the carpet was now known to be synthetic, we followed the manufacturer's guidance and cleaned it carefully by hand using a controlled low-moisture process.
Sometimes the Right Decision Is Not to Clean
Perhaps the most important part of this job happened before any cleaning took place.
Our technicians could probably have made an educated judgement about the carpet on their first visit. Instead, they chose not to gamble with something belonging to a client.
A sample was obtained.
The fibres were tested.
The construction was confirmed.
The manufacturer was consulted.
Only then was the carpet cleaned.
That's an important part of the MASTERCLEAN® standard. Experience isn't about believing you always know the answer on sight. Sometimes it's knowing when to stop, investigate and make certain before proceeding.
