Persian Rug Cleaning in Exeter – Six Dusting Passes Reveal Hidden Dirt

Persian Rug Cleaning in Exeter – Six Dusting Passes Reveal Hidden Dirt

Another busy day in the MASTERCLEAN® rug-cleaning workshop in Exeter, where our junior technician Zack has been carefully cleaning a beautiful traditional Persian-style rug collected from another lovely customer in Sidmouth, East Devon.

At first glance, the rug appeared relatively clean, with its striking blue central medallion, deep reds and intricate patterns. But appearances can be deceptive!

Six passes to remove the hidden dry soil

Before introducing any moisture, Zack began our thorough dry-dusting process, working from the reverse of the rug to release deeply embedded dust, grit and particulate soil from within its construction.

Ordinarily, two or three passes are sufficient. On this occasion, however, it took six separate passes before the amount of dry soil being released had reduced sufficiently.

The photographs show just how much hidden dirt had accumulated beneath the surface.

Removing this abrasive material before cleaning is an important part of our approach to caring for traditional rugs.

Gentle, controlled cleaning — without detergents

Following inspection and appropriate colourfastness testing, the rug was treated using , our specialist cleaning solutions.

We then carried out carefully controlled fresh-water extraction at approximately 80–100 psi, using multiple dry extraction passes to minimise retained moisture.

At MASTERCLEAN®, we do not routinely immerse rugs or subject them to unnecessary saturation. Our cleaning methods are selected according to each rug's construction, condition and suitability.

Careful drying and finishing

Following cleaning, two turbo air movers were used to accelerate drying. The rug was then left to air overnight to allow any remaining moisture to evaporate before final inspection and wrapping.

The finished result is beautiful, with vibrant colours and wonderful definition throughout the intricate pattern.

An excellent piece of work by Zack, really well done to him, and another lovely rug prepared for its return home.
